Happy last day of 2009 to all of you and what a cold day it will be! I am sitting here thinking about how quickly this year went by. It has been a cool and wet year for eastern Nebraska with little severe weather and LOTS of snow. Craig- to answer your question I double checked my numbers and NWS says average snowfall at Eppley from 1971 to 2000 is 28.0″ and 30.2″.   I’m forecasting bitter cold temps overnight tonight (-6°) and for the first day of 2010 (7°).    If the forecast holds true (& I would be willing to put money on it) New Years Day will be the coldest high and low in over 10 years! Wow!! Good thing I have the day off and can stay inside where it’s warm, which I’m recommending to everyone.Â
We’re still on track to pick-up more snow over the weekend. The storm will not be a major one but should provide a dusting to 1″ of snow.Â
I hope you have a wonderful (& warm) final day of 2009 and that 2010 will bring you joy and many blessings!!
Happy New Year!
Liz
IS there a possibility we don’t make it above 0 on wednesday or thursday?
Hey ryan, Liz and company, i got about 4″ of new snow last night with the clipper!
Yep, probably about 3 inches of new snow here in La Vista last night. Really piling up.
what ya think for midweek storm
The midweek storm is not expected to produce large QPF totals, but the cold temperatures will produce high snow-to-liquid ratios. With this in mind, I believe that several inches of snow are a good possibility. The models are still showing the typical levels of variability in track and intensity, but I’d be very surprised if we manage to miss this one entirely. It will also be windy, so wind chills could get very cold.
Right on Willy! Ecmwf is interesting, showing 2 pieces of energy at 500mb merging over Iowa by Wed night/Thu morning, while GFS comes down in one piece.. we’ll see what happens with this.. but 500mb HFC track appears to be to our southwest.. heavy snow (4″ back in the old days) would occur to the left of the track.. that would mean 4″+ a potential here..
Looks like an initial wave may move through Tue night.. that could could give us 2″ by Wednesday morning, with the main part of the system arriving Wednesday night.. should be interesting!
I’m trying to find someone who predicted 40″ in the bag by Jan 7th. Can’t find a single one. We know it wasn’t the ones who said a dusting to an inch with cloudy skys today. Thats ok I love surprises!!!
I don’t know how you guys got 4″ lol I was in the banding along with you guys. Anyway…I probably got an inch here in northwest O, maybe two at best….drove around central and west O and didn’t seem like anyone got over 1-2″.
Anyway, the midweek storm does appear it could be two different waves…one bringing a plunge of cold air…then another with a plunge of even colder air. Looks like we could see maybe 1-3″ with each wave. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see some 2-6″ amounts throughout the area.
Cody,
I measured in about half a dozen spots and got 3 inches each time. Didn’t have any 4 inch amounts though. There was also a cooperative observer report of 3.5 inches from Gretna and 3.0 inches from Springfield. Maybe there was just a little less in the northwest part of town?
Got about 3″ here west of Bennington. Looks like more is on the way on Wednesday. I’m getting tired of plowing this crap.
Man I dont think its ever going to stop snowing
Would comment on the new post but it won’t let me.
Thanks for the update guys, the clipper is going to be a fun one with the wind and snow, leaning toward 5-6 inch in my opinion. (just a hobby, no training). My mailbox is already covered, and I have no place to stack any new snow, might have to snow blow part of my yard to blow the new snow there.
I’ll echo what goose said. It’s getting to the point where I can’t snowblow over the walls of snow I have on each side of my driveway. I don’t mind the snow…but the cold really irritates me.
Becoming more worried after looking at the new
models with the wind speeds. We could see winds of 30 to 40 mph with higher gusts. The snow we have on the ground and the snow we will be getting in the next day or two will be blowing and drifting like crazy. Even with the falling snow have ended by the time the strongest winds get here we will see white outs and roads drifted shut. This could be really bad in Omaha too as the snowbanks are piled high along side all the streets we could see some streets unpassable right here in the city. Add that to the cold and wind-chills we are talking about a very serious winter storm. Would not be shocked to see Blizzard warnings issued at some point. But on the bright side warmer weather coming later on the weekend.
