Wednesday severe wx. update

The SPC has us in a mod. risk for severe weather for this evening into tonight.   We are just finishing up a conference call with the NWS.  Thinking as of this afternoon is initial development should be close to 5pm.   Question is will this be a supercellular set up or squall line set up?  One thing for sure, areas that see the sun this afternoon will quickly turn unstable.  The main target area for any tornadic activity appears to be from the Platte river north.  Its this area that has alot of wind shear.  Watch those winds, if they turn to the SE then the chances for tornadic supercells increase.  Very large hail will also be of concern as temps aloft at 500mb are very cold.  Another problem we will encounter is very heavy rain with upwards of 2″ likely.

thanks for the update guys! despite some of the jerks on here, there are many of us who enjoy and appreciate the updates!

  3. Pete says:

I would also enjoy more updates as the day moves along as I have outdoor plans for the evening. Appreciate the site, thank you.

  4. DMG says:

cold front is through G.I.and is at the doorstep of norfolk, does this mean most of the severe weather is going to be east of us? flood watch is dropped out in grand island.

  5. Craig says:

It means nothing. We are still gun ho for Severe storms

  6. Craig says:

Large Cumulus Field is developing and moving in Eastern Nebraska and Northern Kansas. This is usually a sign of where the storms will fire.

  7. Thomas says:

Is there any way to get an ETA for these storms in and around the metro area? Also, which area seems most “primed” for the more severe of weather?

  8. Craig says:

SPC says Tornado Watch to be issued for Eastern NEB and Western IA as well as NE KS

  9. Dean says:

ETA for the metro is difficult to pin down right now due to the fact that we may be dealing with individual cellular storms in our area…expect a squall line along the cold front toward 10pm. Front is now through Norfolk…pressing toward Columbus so all activity should be east of there. Watch will be issued shortly

  10. Dean says:

PDS Tornado watch just issued til 10pm

  11. Jerry K says:

    Thanks for the update Dean.

  12. Craig says:

Dean, Their is no PDS Watchm its just a Tornado watch

  13. Tony says:

Dean — Being that the front is near Norfolk, those storms have to fire on that cold front before 10PM. I’m guessing more around 5PM and quickly go linear with a chance of embedded supercells that could spawn tornadoes.

  14. Dean says:

The front is east of Norfolk and columbus right now moving east at around 20mph. Storms are starting to fire now just ahead of the front. Next hour or two should see rapid development

  15. Craig says:

Tornado possibility is high over Omaha. we have a outflow boundry near us thus, chances of strong tornados

  16. DMG says:

dean, will the storms fire east of lincoln or west? it looks like the cold front is in seward co.

  17. Craig says:

    http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=oax

Expect Tornadic Cells to Develop in Omaha with-in the hour. Cold front to interact with Boundry west of the metro and to spawn severe storms rapidly.

  18. DMG says:

Craig what is your thinking around lincoln

  19. Concerned says:

Craig while I appreciate your constant attention of the forum it seems you are always one predicting the worst will happen and it will hit Omaha for sure.

It always seems like the storm of the century, be it in winter or “strong torandos” will always drill us, then they never do.

    Calm down a little!

  20. Lynn says:

How do i send you a picture?
i have pictures of the clouds above Gretna but i don’t know how to send them to you!

  21. Craig says:

Hello ‘Concerned” looks like i was correct as tornado warnings were issued for the Metro

  22. this_sucks says:

4 boy scouts confirmed dead and tons of injuries at a cub scout camp around little sioux. I like severe weather, but not when this stuff happens, this is getting really old…bring on the sun but not the mosquitos

  23. Mark says:
